Composition in a New Genre

For this blog post, you need to complete it together as part of your group--this will help get you into the mind-set and rhythm of working in your group. You need decide on a plan of attack, in other words, a detailed plan of action that shows your thinking and understanding of how and when to organize and complete this project. Use this blog post as a time for your group to organize the logistics of the project and to prepare for the work day on Monday. You need to provide an overview of project expectations (as established by the group), project specifics (genre, audience, rhetorical situation), and calendar of events (how/when the work will occur).

You do NOT need to comment back to another for this post.

Due: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 by class time.

  1. For this project we are going to create a magazine article that explains how Americanized college food is. We will look into the cafeteria's attempt to create ethnic food, like the Chinese New Year celebration and other attempts at world cuisine. We think it really connect both of our topics because mine has a lot to do with college food and his is about Americanized food. We went to the dining hall and we saw noticed that they served all American food and had little diversity in the food choices. Next we will start to research and put all of our ideas together. We have already taken some pictures of the dining hall's food that we will use in the article, yet we still need look up the menus for the cafeteria and incorporate them in the article. Our audience for this article will be very popular and probably in a college campus magazine. We want to make it informational as well as informative. When we go to class on Tuesday we will brainstorm more and start to write out magazine article. This was the best way to connect our topics and we think it will present it really well.

  2. For our project, Natalie, Sam and I plan to create a video montage. In this montage, we will depict the different ways of self-expression. The video will consist of pictures and pieces of previously created videos. We also plan to take a part of a video that we create and incorporate it into our video. Our video will be for a popular source. We believe this video will represent all three of our papers. My specific topic was on the motivations of body art, Sam’s was on graffiti and Natalie’s was on male models. We have found that a commonality among all three of our papers is self-expression. Through decorating our bodies, using our bodies to sell clothes and the art of graffiti, an expression or idea is being portrayed. We hope to find videos and pictures that represent expression and how important it is. We will begin collecting videos and pictures tomorrow during our workday and work to create a more concrete research question.

  3. For this project, we decided to use a powerpoint-like site to make our presentation. The new topic we formed from our topics are empowered women. Both of our research topics were about older women. My topic was about cougars and it talks about how women can make their own choices and take charge in the relationship. Monica's topic was about abusive relationships and how women leave this type of relationships. The audience type for our project is older women like 18 or older because these topics are not suitable or relatable to younger girls. We decided to relate it to pop culture. The first thing we need to do is make an outline of what our powerpoint will look like and what information we would put in there. Then gather the information. We might change these two steps around. Then we will put our powerpoint-like project together and choosing an appropriate theme. Tomorrow, specifically, we will try to get our new research done and form an outline.

  4. For our project, Joie and I have decided to do a visual representation, either a collage or assortments of drawings, to depict latent messaging. Or we will analyze music videos and look at the themes and messages within them. Our genre is pop culture and our audience are people that enjoy listening to music. Both of our research papers explored meanings behind lyrics and how they have an effect. Joie's paper was about hip-hop and the negative effect of the lyrics on youth. My paper delved into how the lyrics and album covers of the Beatles music had hidden clues that helped support the "Paul is Dead" conspiracy theory. The first thing we need to do is to make an outline of our project and see what we need to do to get the point of our project across. Tomorrow, we will be looking at music videos and other popular sources that have latent messages and we will finalize the logistics of our project in class.

  5. For this project, Alison, Maeve and I have combined our topics to create a new topic that centers around the problems that teenage girls face, particularly pressures exerted upon them by the media and their peers. This is a combination of our three research topics - Alison studied the effects of the media and actresses on young girls' body image, I studied Greek Life and its effects on its members (particularly sorority members), and Maeve studied teenage pregnancy through the lens of the MTV hit show 16 and Pregnant. We decided that we would like to create a game-like structure to mimic real choices that teenage girls face, and depict possible outcomes of these everyday choices. A game is a great way to show just how much the media and social networking influence the daily life of a teenage girl. Although the problems teenage girls face are complex, we are approaching the new topic from an inviting, innovative, and light-hearted genre. We see instances like college frat parties in various media venues, thus we think it is important to illustrate how the choices teenage girls face have serious implications that the media tends to gloss over, and glamorize. Life is not a movie, and it is necessary to highlight what happens after the "big party."We haven't decided on a medium yet - we are looking at doing an online game-generator or making our own to be played.

  6. For this project, we are going to either write a rap about becoming sick and visiting the doctor or an obituary of the immune system. Tomorrow we will make our decision based on the sources that we find and how well they can combine the ideas of both of our projects. We want to make sure that we will be able to accurately execute a project before we begin it. If we decide to write the rap, we will have our lyrics by Thursday. We will then continue to modify and edit them until Saturday, which is when we will record the rap. We will have the video edited by the beginning of the week, and will have our rational completed Wednesday. If we decide to write the obituary, we will finish a draft for Thursday. We will then create a finalized draft over the weekend and work on our rational. No matter which project we do, we would like to completely finalize it over the weekend, and meet that week before it is due to make sure we have a complete project and rational. At this point the rap seems a little more challenging and risky, which makes us nervous, but we are not counting it out yet. Both projects have their own specific genre, however, the audience is still the same. We would like to create them with the class in mind. The genres, obituary and rap, are made for the general public. In this case, the class will be viewing them.

  7. For Jake and my project we are going to be discussing American consumerism. This will come in the form of a spread in a magazine. It will include multiple short articles, stories, examples, and facts. We are going to discuss the spending habits of Americans and do a brief break down on where most of the money spent is going. This article will be a general informative article that is directed at making the average person consider the implications of consumerism in their every day lives.
During class we will start out by trying to get the bulk of out research together, and decide a general structure for what the magazine article will look like. The main point of the workshop is to create the framework for the entire project. From here on out we can

    1. look toward a specific point of interest by creating a thesis statement. The most important thing is that we get all of the facts in order before we begin the project, so that we are not biased but instead considering the information.
